Our history began with a dream: to empower the talent and development of Mexican engineering.
In 1947, a new presidential administration was beginning, and the constant growth of the population required the creation of more infrastructure. Mexico was faced with the task of carrying out the necessary works towards progress and training professionals who would be capable of holding the reins of the future.
Following this philosophy, a group of young enthusiasts and entrepreneurs formed an association of civil engineers lead by Bernardo Quintana Arrioja, a visionary who assumed the mission of contributing to the modernization and growth of Mexico. "There were eighteen of us at first--some quit their jobs, others donated their cars, I set the office in my own home. On July 4th, 1947, the corporate charter was signed, and on the fourteenth of that same month we won the tender to build the Multifamiliar Alemán".
We were born with the intent to launch the talent and growth of Mexican engineering. Thanks to that first project--a multi-family housing development-- and Quintana's leadership, today we have accumulated 68 years of experience in providing complete solutions to the greatest construction challenges.
From the beginning, we were known for our excellent organization and attention to the smallest detail, as well our commitment to costs and deadlines. Our philosophy remains the same until today and in the future.
A number of years and projects later, we had grown to more than two thousand shareholders and seventy thousand Mexican and foreign employees: professionals, technicians, workers and others. Relying on our human and entrepreneurial power, we decided to venture into industrial construction with a paper factory in Tuxtepec, Oaxaca.
As we grew, our alliances with specialized construction companies have been important to serving other needs of the nation. Companies such as Estructuras y Cimentaciones (ECSA), Conducciones y Pavimentos (IASA), and others were brought on board to help us build roads, wastewater treatment plants and electrical energy.
As a consolidated group of various construction companies, we coordinated and took part in works that were highly important to the nation-- the Belisario Domínguez bridge and the Chihuaha – Pacífico railway. In a matter of years we earned a reputation for excellence, as a company deeply committed to the construction industry.
After accumulating fifteen years of experience in the construction business we began to undertake works that attracted public attention. We had to preserve our image and reputation as never before. In short order the nation's most ambitious electric energy project was entrusted to us: The El Infiernillo hydroelectric dam.
El Infiernillo was for many years Mexico's largest electrical power station, and we were involved from the start, in planning, financing and building it. This project became an unprecedented experience for us, and in turn brought us other contracts for a series of hydraulic works across the country.
Another major project that helped us on our climb to the top was construction of Mexico City's underground rail system, better known as the Metro. This project was born out of our concern for finding a solution to the city's public transit problems. We solved the problem with such efficiency that by the end of the sixties decade we were the country's largest and most committed construction company.
In the late 1960s, the Olympic Games came to Mexico and ICA took on the task of building the Olympic Village as well as the Olympic Stadium on the campus of the national university. We also installed a dramatic copper dome over Palacio de los Deportes, among seven other sports facilities.
In the early 1970s, we celebrated 25 years of successful engineering and construction activities. Because we are always innovating and looking ahead to Mexico's future, we decided to set new and more ambitious goals: expansion into new fields like tourism and cement. Out of this new vision, our involvement in the creation of hotel complexes and roads emerged: a fundamental part of the country's tourism activity.
Since our founding, we have been building ourselves into a great company, a key player in the construction of a modern Mexico. We were the product of a growing country, of a history of collective effort, which has served to urbanize, electrify, irrigate, and communicate a whole nation.
In 1986 we founded Fundación ICA, a non-profit organization, in response to the earthquake that devastated Mexico City in 1985. The objective was simple: to place engineering research at the service of the Nation. Today, Fundación ICA is an institution that supports the education and training of the most highly skilled technicians required for Mexico's technological development.
Since then, we have worked in various countries of Latin America, in the United States, and recently, in Europe and Asia. As experts in developing comprehensive solutions to the Mexico's greatest infrastructure challenges, we joined forces with leading companies around the world. We are still growing, exploring the needs of the rest of the world's population.
Today we have been involved in more than 180 road projects, 61 dams, 38 hospitals, 24 thermoelectric Power Plants, 19 stadiums and sport complexes and 10 housing projects. ICA is founded with a capital of one hundred thousand pesos and the soul of eighteen engineers with a common dream: to work for the development of Mexico. Only months later, ICA won the tender to build the Multifamiliar Alemán housing project.
We built the Belisario Domínguez Bridge set across the Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas. Later that year, we built the Olympic Stadium at Ciudad Universitaria and Ciudad Satélite.
We began construction of the "Presa El Infiernillo" hydroelectric power station, which was for many years the largest in Mexico.
We started planning and development of Line 1 of Mexico City's Underground Rail System--the Metro.
We built the Palacio de los Deportes and Villa Olímpica which would host the Olympic Games in Mexico.
We commenced construction of a great number of roads and national highways, along with tourist facilities and hotels like the Camino Real, the Cancún Sheraton, and others.
Bernardo Quintana Arrioja, engineer and founder of ICA, passed away.
We created Fundación ICA to aid in the research and technological development of buildings after the devastating '85 earthquake.
We became the first Mexican Company to be listed both on the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores and the New York Stock Exchange. In the same decade we build the emblematic Autopista del Sol and highly popular Papalote Children's Museum.
We created ICA Ingeniería with the goal of offering comprehensive service to the Group's different business units.
We joined the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, UNAM's Institute of Biology and the Sociedad Comunal de San Miguel and Santo Tomás Ajusco in signing the Adhesion Agreement of the ICA-CONAFOR-AJUSCO initiative, pledging to make responsible use of environmental resources.
